Instructors

Fairwinds Sailing School is run by a staff of qualified and experienced Instructors. Selecting our staff especially the Sailing Instructors is one of the most important issues. Selection is made strictly upon knowledge of sailing, qualification in related aspects of sailing, personal experience and personality. Our Instructors are are trained: to be dedicated, to teach enthusiastically to teach in a most friendly and helpful manner and to apply a professional approach.

Fairwind Sailing Instructors conduct their courses on a set program that had been specifically designed for each course. They teach specific skills and techniques that our experienced master instructors have developed and upgraded over the years. Some of our instructors taught sailing on a regular basis for the past twenty years or so.

Apart all the above criteria all of our instructors are certified and possess these qualifications:

1. Sailing Experience

All Instructors are certified up to Level Four of our curriculum as a minimum. They teach up to Level Two in our sailing program. Instructor should at least have been sailing regularly for these past 4 years. They are also experienced in teaching sailing at clubs and schools.

2. Fitness and Swimming Ability

Our Instructors have a good standard of physical fitness should have a good level of swimming ability, and capable to dive without any equipment under a small sailing boat from one side to another. (please refer to form IFF 02 to check whether one has the minimum requirements stated on the form.)

3. First Aid Course

All instructors must attend and be certified as first aider. A typical course is available locally by St. John Ambulance.This course is very extensive and is covered in 9 lessons. The duration of each lesson is about two and half-hours

4. Safety at Sea and Life Saving Test

Each instructor is well trained and aware of safety at sea regulations.They are also trained by a qualified professional lifesaver to make a sea rescue. The outline of this rescue operation consists of motoring out from base to a capsized boat about 400 Meters offshore and recover a person trapped underneath the boat, and bringing the casualty back safely to base and administer sailor to normal first aid routines.(this kind training is available and revised regularly at our sailing school.)

5. Motor Boat License

All Instructors should hold a valid motor boat-driving license issued by Malta Maritime Authority. (Please contact MMA or MCAST for details about this Licence.)

6. Coaching Courses

All our Instructors have attended various levels of coaching courses covering several coaching topics ex; Session planning, Role of coach, Growth and development, Sport Safety, Teaching ability skills and analysis, Skill development, Physical mental preparation etc. (such courses are organized by Malta Olympic Committee)

7. Master Instructors

Our Master Instructors who conduct the higher level courses are also qualified in University degree in coaching, MOC National level certification or yachtmaster offshore.

Teaching Sailing is a very rewarding and challenging job. Trainee instructors assist our instructors until they gain the necessary experience and will be trained and guided to attain the above requirements.
